Over the years, Salone del Mobile, besides being a trade event where architects and interior designers from all over the world meet to see the latest in furniture, lights, bathrooms, kitchens and accessories; has also become a quick break destination for people building or renovating homes. A cat-nap of a holiday with a one-stop-decision-point for one’s dream home, great bonhomie and party, all rolled into one. The number of Indian visitors has been growing each year and this year it is expected to hit a new level.
As an indicator of how serious we are getting about home decor, it would seem like the cracking of a shell just before the egg is hatched. The current timing makes it a very precarious juncture for the industry. Care taken to sharpen the ethos at this point, will determine, to a large extent, the future activity in this space. Emphasis on quality, an appreciation of the making process, distinction between the good and the not-so-good, the rationale behind what deserves an extra spend and above all the ability to decipher and extract personal joy out of a purchase, is at the core of an evolved design consciousness. While this would form the larger goal at the macro level; at the micro level, each one of us related to the industry needs to stay mindfully engaged in respective fields, be it manufacturing, the crafts, design services, retail or even education.
