When it comes to beauty—our products, routines, and priorities—we learned a lot about ourselves earlier this year, didn’t we? While we were sheltering in place, there were tons of memes and posts about haircuts and color, Botox, mani-pedis, lash extensions (all the things we were missing). Sure, we were commiserating and joking, but in fact, some of those things are important in their own right. They make us feel good about ourselves, even when there is practically no one else around. And I believe that is the key to beauty: doing what makes you feel happy and confident. As for me, I colored my hair at home, but every time I opened that box, I wondered if I should just skip it and see how gray I actually am. (The gorgeous women in our story “Amazing Grays,” page 92, are inspiring on that front.) A post- quarantine haircut was top priority, but I have scaled back on makeup and I still haven’t gotten a mani- pedi. Once doctors’ offices reopened, I went in for Botox and some filler, plumping up those “smile lines” between my nose and the corners of my mouth. I realize that it’s a tad silly, given the fact that much of my face is often covered by a mask! But, hey, I like it—and again, that’s the point.
