I find myself captivated by the story in this month’s issue, detailing Tony Hoskins’ efforts to recover a remarkably rare Spit re PR.IV from a mountainside in Norway. The intention is to return the aircraft, AA810, to flight… a noble and unique goal as it will be the world’s only flying early mark reconnaissance Spitfire. But there is so much more to the story. Yes, it’s a treasure from aviation history, but this rhapsody in (PRU) Blue was also flown by Alistair ‘Sandy’ Gunn, one of the determined prisoners of war who dug tunnels to free themselves from the German Stalag Luft III camp. This, of course, has become legend as The Great Escape. While the starstudded 1963 film of the same name has become a favourite war movie for the masses, it also reminds us of the ensuing tragedy, whereby 50 of the escapees were captured and subsequently executed.
