Last year, we kicked off 2018 with our first Creativity Issue, which featured The Country’s 100 Most Creative. Many of you wrote in to say it was one of your favorite issues ever; the remaining letters essentially said, “For the love of ironstone, where are my neutrals?!” Hence, the magazine in your hands, which revisits our annual ode to lightening up. (Creative enthusiasts: Do not despair and/or send beautifully calligraphed protests. We’re crafting something special for you, too. ) But here’s the thing: Decorating with neutrals does call for a high degree of creativity. A bold color choice is typically one of the easiest ways to make a “statement,” so those who crave understatement must find other ways to communicate. Homeowner Nancy Fishelson (page 74) found her voice over time, with a foolproof formula of fresh white hues and folk art. Jeannette Fristoe (page 58) relies on a chorus of collectibles that helps her cottage sing. And designer Leanne Ford (page 20) has found happy harmony blending farmhouse favorites and midcentury mainstays against a backdrop of textures. (Some of my favorite neutral decorating go-tos can be seen here.) Still a neutral decorating skeptic? Perhaps “Character Building” (page 66).
